symbol of Rupees : info

The Indian rupee (Hindi: रुपया) (sign: Indian rupee; code: INR) is the official currency of Republic of India. The issuance of the currency is controlled by the Reserve Bank of India.

India with a robust economy and a strong GDP growth rate is making a super impact on the world stage, what can be called as a bid to get ready for the stage of super powers the Union cabinet and Indian reserve bank have finalized a global symbol for the Indian Rupee.
Like the US Dollar, British pound and the Japanese Yen the Indian Rupee too will have its character.

To signal the growing strength and power of the Indian economy, a group has selected a symbol that denotes the currency. The Rupee will be the fifth currency to have a distinct identity, joining the dollar, pound, euro, and yen, and will be standard symbol for computers within two years.

The winning design was created by D Udaya Kumar who said, "My design is based on the Tricolour, with two lines at the top and white space in between. I wanted the symbol for the Rupee to represent the Indian flag. It is a perfect blend of Indian and Roman letters: a capital 'R', and Devanagari 'ra', which represent rupiya, to appeal to international and Indian audiences."

"I worked on it for few months and made numerous designs. Finally, I shortlisted 8 to 10 designs and then refined them further till I got this one," he said.

Presentation by D. Uday Kumar on Benefits of New Rupee Symbol

D. Uday Kumar, Assistant Professor at IIT Guwahati made history by creating an awesome symbol for Indian Rupee. His design is approved by Indian cabinet and in next few months, it will be visible on different places. Of course this new symbol will make rupee more usable in other countries. He pursued his PHD from IIT, Bombay. Finally he has come up with a presentation for this new symbol where you can see what are the significance of different curves in the new symbol.

IMPORTANT POINTS IN HIS PRESENTATION

  • Symbol has taken parts from devnagri “Ra”
  •  It is also having a touch or English “R”
  • Cross at the middle of “Ra” is taken from the Indian tri-color flag
  • Cross shows equality which is available in most of the currency symbol worldwide
  • It is easier to write or design this symbol as it is having less joints
  • Uday has shown many demos of this new symbol. e.g. on stamp paper, shopping bags, railway tickets, government’s official documents etc

There are some shocking stories saying

The jurors took only 17 hours to go through all the 3331 designs, which means roughly 18 seconds per design were given.

The 5 shortlisted symbols are not bad, but they are not good enough when you consider that over 3300 designs were received.

Here is another thing, the person, Ms. Nondita Correa-Mehrotra, who had given the suggestion to go in for this competition is one of the 5 rupee symbol shortlisted candidates.

The RTI query also clearly shows that the procedure was not at all transparent – It was not video-graphed, which now-a-days is a norm for all such government decisions. Additionally, whole jury was not present during the rupee symbol presentations.

ADVANTAGES:

Definitely Advantage, it reflects the India's culture to the world. It will show India's individuality to the world especially in differentiating Indian Rupees from Pakistan, Nepal Srilanka and other countries using rupee as their currency. When rupee joins in the elite panel of US Dollar, Euro, Pound and Japanese Yen it will lead to the economic growth.
Globalization:
This symbol make identification of our indian money among the world.
